    Safety First: Our Non-Negotiable Commitment

At Gorilla Communications, safety isn't just a policy—it's the foundation of everything we do. Our Target Zero Safety Program reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring every team member goes home safe at the end of every shift. In underground construction, where hazards are inherent to the work, this commitment requires constant vigilance, comprehensive training, and strict adherence to best practices.

    Understanding Underground Construction Hazards

Underground construction presents unique safety challenges that require specialized knowledge and preparation:

Utility Strikes: The most significant risk in underground work is striking existing utilities—gas lines, electrical conduits, water mains, or telecommunications cables. A utility strike can result in explosions, electrocution, service disruptions, and costly repairs.

Cave-ins and Soil Instability: Trenching operations create the risk of soil collapse, which can trap or bury workers. Soil conditions can change rapidly, making continuous assessment essential.

Equipment Hazards: Directional drilling rigs, trenchers, and excavators are powerful machines that can cause severe injury if operated improperly or without adequate safety protocols.

Environmental Factors: Weather conditions, traffic, and site-specific obstacles add layers of complexity to every job.

Our Safety Protocol: Before the Dig

Safety begins long before equipment arrives on site. Our pre-construction safety process includes:

811 Utility Locates: Every project starts with a call to 811 to have underground utilities marked. We never begin excavation until all utilities have been properly identified and marked.

Site Assessment: Our supervisors conduct comprehensive site assessments, identifying potential hazards, overhead obstructions, traffic patterns, and soil conditions.

Job Safety Analysis (JSA): Before each task, crews complete a detailed JSA that identifies specific hazards and the controls needed to mitigate them.

Pre-Task Safety Meetings: Every morning begins with a safety briefing where crews review the day's work, potential hazards, and emergency procedures.

    During Operations: Continuous Vigilance

Once work begins, safety requires constant attention:

Potholing/Soft Digging: When working near marked utilities, we use vacuum excavation or hand digging to expose utilities safely before mechanical excavation continues.

Trench Safety: For open trenching, we follow OSHA regulations for shoring, sloping, and protective systems. No worker enters a trench over 5 feet deep without proper cave-in protection.

Spotters and Communication: Equipment operators always have spotters for blind spots. Clear hand signals and radio communication ensure everyone stays coordinated.

PPE Compliance: Hard hats, high-visibility vests, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection are mandatory on every job site. Task-specific PPE is required as conditions demand.

    Training and Certification

Our safety record is built on comprehensive training:

  1. **OSHA 10 Certification**: All field personnel complete OSHA 10-hour construction safety training
  2. **Competent Person Training**: Supervisors are trained to identify and correct hazards in real-time
  3. **Equipment Certification**: Operators are certified on every piece of equipment they use
  4. **First Aid and CPR**: Team leads are certified in first aid and CPR
  5. **Bucket Top and At-Height Rescue**: Specialized rescue training for aerial work scenarios
  6. Incident Response and Learning

Despite our best efforts, close calls can occur. Our response protocol ensures we learn from every incident:

Immediate Response: Any incident or near-miss triggers an immediate work stoppage and assessment.

Root Cause Analysis: We conduct thorough investigations to understand not just what happened, but why.

Corrective Action: Findings are translated into specific corrective actions that prevent recurrence.

Company-Wide Communication: Lessons learned are shared across all teams so everyone benefits from the experience.

    The Results: Our Safety Record

Our commitment to safety delivers measurable results. Our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) consistently ranks well below industry average, reflecting our strong safety performance. More importantly, our crews trust that they work for a company that genuinely prioritizes their wellbeing.

    Safety as a Competitive Advantage

For our clients, our safety culture translates to reliable project delivery. Projects plagued by safety incidents face delays, cost overruns, and regulatory scrutiny. By prioritizing safety, we protect our workers and deliver the consistent, professional service our clients depend on.

Safety is everyone's responsibility. At Gorilla Communications, we live this principle every day.
